Chapter 10 – Pumps, Plumbing and Water Flow



The plumbing system is the circulatory system of an aquaponics setup. Even the healthiest fish and plants cannot thrive if water is not moving efficiently throughout the system.

Your pump has one primary job: continuously move water from the fish tank through the filtration and grow beds before returning it to the fish.

As a general rule, aim to circulate the entire volume of your fish tank at least once every hour. For example, a 1,000-litre fish tank should have a pump capable of delivering around 1,000 litres per hour after allowing for the height it must lift the water, known as the head height.

When selecting a pump, always check its flow-rate chart rather than relying only on the number printed on the box. Flow decreases as the lifting height increases.

PVC pipe is the most common plumbing material because it is durable, affordable and easy to work with. Use pipe sizes that allow water to flow freely without creating unnecessary restriction.

Valves are another important component. Installing ball valves lets you fine-tune water flow, isolate sections for maintenance and balance multiple grow beds.

Many aquaponics systems use one of two water movement methods:

• Continuous Flow – Water constantly circulates through the grow beds. This design is simple, reliable and ideal for many beginners.

• Flood and Drain – Grow beds repeatedly fill with water before draining. This cycle delivers nutrients while also drawing fresh oxygen into the root zone. Bell siphons are commonly used to automate this process.

Keep plumbing runs as simple as possible. Every unnecessary bend, fitting or restriction reduces flow and creates more potential failure points.

Always have a backup plan. A spare pump, extra fittings and replacement airline tubing can prevent small problems from becoming major losses if equipment fails.
