Chapter 12 – Building Your System Step by Step

With your design complete, it's time to build your aquaponics system. Careful preparation during construction will save countless hours of troubleshooting later.

Step 1 – Prepare the Site

Choose a level location with good sunlight for your plants, easy access to power and water, and enough room to move comfortably around the system. If the ground isn't level, correct it before installing any equipment.

Step 2 – Position the Fish Tank

Place the fish tank on a solid, level base capable of supporting its full weight. Remember that 1 litre of water weighs approximately 1 kilogram, so a 1,000-litre tank weighs well over one tonne once filled.

Step 3 – Install the Grow Beds

Position the grow beds so water can drain freely back to the fish tank or sump. Check that each bed is level to ensure even water distribution.

Step 4 – Install the Plumbing

Connect the pump, supply lines, drains and return lines. Use quality fittings and support pipework to reduce stress on joints. Before adding fish or plants, test every connection for leaks.

Step 5 – Add the Growing Media

Wash gravel, scoria or expanded clay thoroughly before placing it into the grow beds. This removes dust that would otherwise cloud the water.

Step 6 – Fill the System

Fill the system with clean, dechlorinated water. If you're using town water, remove chlorine or chloramine before introducing fish, as these chemicals can harm both fish and beneficial bacteria.

Step 7 – Test the Equipment

Run the pump continuously. Check water flow, inspect every fitting for leaks and confirm that aeration is working correctly. Make adjustments now while the system is still empty.

Resist the temptation to add fish immediately. The next stage is cycling the system so beneficial bacteria can establish themselves.
