Chapter 3 – The Nitrogen Cycle

The Invisible Engine That Keeps Everything Alive

Every successful aquaponics system depends on one invisible process: the nitrogen cycle. You cannot see it happening, but it determines whether your fish stay healthy and your plants flourish.

The Journey of Nitrogen

When fish eat, they produce waste containing ammonia. Ammonia is highly toxic to fish, even at relatively low levels. Fortunately, beneficial bacteria begin converting ammonia into nitrite. A second group of bacteria then converts nitrite into nitrate, which is far less toxic and is the preferred nitrogen source for most plants.

Why Cycling Takes Time

A new aquaponics system does not contain enough beneficial bacteria on day one. Their populations must gradually establish on every wet surface. This process is called cycling the system and usually takes several weeks. Patience during this stage protects your fish and builds a stable ecosystem.
