Aquaponics Mastery
Chapter 8 – Choosing the Right Plants
Plants are the final link in the aquaponics ecosystem. They absorb the nutrients produced by your fish and beneficial bacteria, helping clean the water while providing fresh food for your table.
Not every plant grows equally well in aquaponics. Some thrive with very little effort, while others require higher nutrient levels, warmer temperatures or additional supplementation.
The easiest plants for beginners include:
• Lettuce – Fast-growing, reliable and one of the most productive aquaponic crops.
• Asian greens – Pak choy, bok choy and tatsoi grow exceptionally well.
• Herbs – Basil, mint, parsley, coriander and chives are consistently productive.
• Spinach and silverbeet – Excellent leafy crops that tolerate a range of conditions.
As your system matures, you can also grow:
• Tomatoes
• Cucumbers
• Capsicums
• Chillies
• Eggplants
• Strawberries
These fruiting plants demand more nutrients, especially potassium, calcium and iron, so they generally perform best in well-established systems.
Plant spacing is important. Crowded plants compete for light and airflow, increasing the risk of disease. Give each plant enough room to reach its full size.
Choose varieties that suit your local season. Even though aquaponics provides constant water and nutrients, temperature and daylight still influence growth.
Harvest regularly. Frequent picking encourages many herbs and leafy vegetables to produce new growth, extending their productive life.
