Chapter 11 – Designing Your First Aquaponics System
Designing your first aquaponics system is exciting, but it doesn't need to be complicated. Many beginners believe they need a large, expensive setup to be successful. The truth is, smaller and simpler systems are often easier to manage and teach you everything you need to know before expanding.
The goal is to create a balanced ecosystem where fish, beneficial bacteria and plants work together naturally.
Start With Your Goals
Before buying any equipment, ask yourself a few simple questions.

Do you want to grow herbs?

Would you like to grow vegetables?

Do you want to keep ornamental fish or edible fish?

Is this a decorative feature or a food-producing system?

How much space do you have available?
Your answers will determine the size and style of system you build.
Choosing the Right Location
A good location is one of the most important decisions you'll make.
Look for an area that:

Receives at least 5–6 hours of sunlight each day.

Has access to electricity.
-
Is close to a water supply.
-
Is easy to maintain.
-
Has good drainage.
-
Is protected from strong winds where possible.
Remember, you'll be spending time maintaining and enjoying your system, so place it somewhere you'll see it regularly.
Selecting Your Fish Tank
The fish tank is the heart of your aquaponics system.
For beginners, a tank between 500 and 1,000 litres is ideal. Larger tanks are generally more stable because changes in water quality happen more slowly.
Suitable tanks include:

Food-grade plastic tanks

Fibreglass tanks

Poly tanks
-
Decorative ponds
-
Stock troughs
Avoid containers that have previously held chemicals.
Choosing Grow Beds
Grow beds are where your plants remove nutrients from the water.
Media-filled grow beds are the easiest option for beginners because they:

Filter solid waste

Support beneficial bacteria
-
Hold plants securely
-
Require minimal maintenance
Expanded clay is the most popular growing media because it is lightweight, reusable and pH neutral.
Pump Selection
Your pump should circulate the entire volume of your fish tank approximately once every hour.
For example:

Always remember that pumps lose flow as the water is lifted higher. Check the pump's performance chart before purchasing.
Plumbing Layout
Keep your plumbing simple.
A basic system consists of:
Fish Tank → Pump → Grow Beds → Return to Fish Tank
Using larger diameter pipes reduces friction losses and improves water flow.
Install isolation valves where practical so individual sections can be serviced without dismantling the whole system.
Flood and Drain
Most beginners use a flood-and-drain system.
The pump fills each grow bed until it reaches a set level. A bell siphon or standpipe then drains the bed back into the fish tank.
This process:

Delivers nutrients to the plants.

Draws oxygen into the root zone.

Encourages healthy bacterial growth.

Prevents roots from becoming waterlogged.
