Understanding Beneficial Bacteria

Introduction

Every thriving aquaponics system depends on workers you will never see. Beneficial bacteria quietly convert toxic fish waste into valuable plant nutrients every minute of every day. Without them, aquaponics would not exist.

Who Are These Bacteria?

The two main groups are nitrifying bacteria. One group converts ammonia into nitrite. A second group converts nitrite into nitrate. They live as thin biofilms on grow media, tank walls, plumbing, filters and any constantly wet surface.

Creating a Home for Bacteria

Bacteria need oxygen, flowing water and a large surface area. This is one reason media-filled grow beds work so well—they provide millions of tiny surfaces where bacteria can colonise. Cleaning every surface until it shines can remove part of this biological filter.

 

Growing Your Workforce

When a system is first started, the bacterial population is tiny. As ammonia becomes available, the colonies slowly multiply. This is why patience during cycling is essential. Rushing the process often leads to stressed fish and unstable water quality.
