Chapter 9 – Grow Beds and Growing Media
The grow bed is where biology, engineering and gardening come together. While it may appear to be just a container full of gravel, it actually performs several important jobs at the same time.
A well-designed grow bed:
• Supports plant roots.
• Houses billions of beneficial bacteria.
• Filters solid fish waste.
• Provides oxygen to the root zone.
• Returns cleaner water to the fish tank.
There are three common types of grow beds used in aquaponics.
1. Media Beds
These are filled with gravel or expanded clay and are the most beginner-friendly option. They provide excellent biological filtration and can grow a wide variety of crops.
2. Deep Water Culture (DWC)
Plants float on rafts with their roots suspended in nutrient-rich water. This method is widely used for commercial lettuce and leafy green production.
3. Nutrient Film Technique (NFT)
A shallow stream of water flows through pipes or channels. NFT works well for herbs and leafy vegetables but generally requires cleaner water than media beds.
Choosing the right growing media is equally important.
Expanded clay pebbles are lightweight, reusable and easy to work with but are usually the most expensive option.
Scoria (volcanic rock) is affordable and provides a large surface area for beneficial bacteria, although it is heavier.
River gravel is inexpensive and widely available, provided it is chemically inert. Avoid limestone-based gravel because it can continually raise the pH of your system.
Grow beds should be deep enough for healthy root development. Around 300 mm is a common depth for media beds, providing enough room for roots and bacterial colonies.
Good drainage is essential. Water should flow evenly through the bed without leaving stagnant areas where waste can accumulate.
