Chapter 6 – Water Quality: The Lifeblood of Your System
In aquaponics, water is far more than something fish swim in. It is the bloodstream of the entire ecosystem, carrying oxygen, nutrients and beneficial bacteria throughout the system.
Healthy water means healthy fish, vigorous plants and stable biological filtration.
The five most important water quality measurements are:
• Temperature – Every fish species has an ideal temperature range. Water that is too hot or too cold creates stress and reduces feeding.
• pH – pH affects fish, plants and beneficial bacteria. Most systems perform best between about 6.8 and 7.2, providing a good balance for all three.
• Ammonia – Should remain at or near zero in an established system. Rising ammonia usually indicates that the biological filter is struggling.
• Nitrite – Also should remain near zero. Elevated nitrite means the nitrogen cycle is incomplete or under pressure.
• Nitrate – This is the plant food. Moderate nitrate levels usually indicate that the biological filter is working well and nutrients are available for plant growth.
Dissolved oxygen is equally critical. Fish, plant roots and beneficial bacteria all depend on oxygen. Good aeration and steady water movement help maintain a healthy system.
Avoid making sudden changes. Large pH adjustments, rapid temperature swings or replacing too much water at once can stress fish and upset the biological balance.
