Aquaponics Mastery
Chapter 7 – Choosing the Right Fish
The fish are the driving force behind every aquaponics system. They provide the nutrients that feed your plants, so choosing the right species is one of the most important decisions you'll make.
The best fish for your system depends on four things:
• Your climate.
• Whether you want to eat the fish.
• Local regulations.
• Your experience level.
In Australia, some of the most common aquaponics species include:
• Jade Perch – Fast-growing, excellent eating, and well suited to warmer climates such as Queensland.
• Silver Perch – Hardy, forgiving, and one of the best choices for beginners.
• Barramundi – Very fast-growing in warm water but require more attention to temperature and water quality.
• Murray Cod – A premium native fish that requires more experience and careful management.
• Rainbow Trout – Ideal for cooler climates or winter production but cannot tolerate warm summer water.
Fish stocking density should be conservative when you're learning. Overcrowding increases waste, reduces oxygen, and leaves less room for error. A lightly stocked system is easier to manage and usually produces healthier fish.
Feed quality is equally important. Good-quality aquaculture pellets provide balanced nutrition and reduce unnecessary waste. Overfeeding is one of the most common beginner mistakes. Feed only what your fish can consume within a few minutes.
Watch your fish every day. Healthy fish swim normally, feed eagerly, and show no obvious injuries or unusual behaviour. A sudden change in appetite is often the first sign that something is wrong.
