Chapter 16 – Daily, Weekly and Monthly System Maintenance

A successful aquaponics system isn't maintained through occasional major repairs—it thrives because of small, consistent habits. Most serious problems begin as minor issues that could have been detected days or weeks earlier.

Daily Tasks

Spend five to ten minutes observing your system.

• Watch your fish. They should be active, feeding well and swimming normally.
• Check the pump is operating correctly.
• Confirm water is flowing through every grow bed.
• Ensure air pumps and air stones are producing plenty of bubbles.
• Look for signs of pests, yellowing leaves or wilting plants.
• Remove any dead leaves or decaying plant material.

Weekly Tasks

Set aside time each week to test and inspect the system.

• Test pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.
• Check water level and top up with dechlorinated water if needed.
• Inspect plumbing for leaks.
• Clean pump intake screens if debris has accumulated.
• Check fish feeding rates and adjust as they grow.
• Remove weeds and prune plants where necessary.

Monthly Tasks

Perform a more detailed inspection.

• Examine all electrical connections for wear or corrosion.
• Check valves, fittings and pipe supports.
• Inspect tanks for cracks or signs of damage.
• Review your maintenance diary and water test records for trends.
• Service pumps and aerators according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

Seasonal Maintenance

As the seasons change, so will your system.

During summer:
• Monitor water temperature closely.
• Increase aeration if temperatures rise.
• Provide shade where necessary.

During winter:
• Feed warm-water fish less if their appetite decreases.
• Protect sensitive plants from frost where required.
• Continue monitoring water quality even if growth slows.

Keeping Records

One of the most valuable habits is maintaining a simple logbook. Record:
• Water test results.
• Fish numbers.
• Feeding amounts.
• Harvest dates.
• Equipment maintenance.
• Any unusual observations.

Over time, these records help you recognise patterns and solve problems much faster.
